Mitutoyo America’s eLearning Courses are designed to give end-users unique, active learning experiences with tools and gages of all varieties. With these unique educational experiences, end-users can open the door to quality and extend the life of their tools with proper use, care, and replacement procedures. Courses are designed by our employees and certified through strict calibration practices and procedures, to combine accuracy and safety through all courses. These courses cover common practices, proper measurement procedures, and detailed operations for more experienced users. Digital versions of the tool are available for visual reference, but it is recommended to have the tool or gage available during the course.

Prerequisites:
GD&T Basics
General Metrology

Course Materials:
In this eLearning Course, Mitutoyo end users will be introduced to MCOSMOS, the software that coincides with operating a Mitutoyo Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). This is an eLearning course for MCOSMOS where users will be introduced to a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) CMM, and the many software modules users can access to operate the machine. This edition of the software will cover C1 – an entry level course for CMM operators to learn the functions of MCOSMOS. It is highly recommended that users have a general understanding of metrology, along with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing – as it will be used throughout this course. Users will get a full-walkthrough from the machine and it’s components, to measurement operations and data reporting capabilities. New users will learn how to measure a basic part program, while experienced users can test their basic skills.

The following topics are covered in this course:
1) Metrology Concepts & Fundamentals
This eLearning course provides a lot of content, so we pick up here with a refresh for information that operators will be expected to know and understand at an entry-level. We start reviewing digital metrology and the six degrees of freedom before touching on machine coordinate systems, part coordinate systems, vectors, and the various coordinate systems we will be using in the course.

2) CMM Hardware Overview
Get to know your Mitutoyo CMM by walking through this overview module. Users will be introduced to the main components that you will interact with during operations; learn about the various sizes, probe heads, and other measuring systems that can be outfitted on your machine. Learn about the proper power-on sequence, along with the various controller units, probe styles, and standard accessories available for your machine.

3) Software Overview
MCOSMOS houses several measuring software modules – our C1 course covers the basic GeoPAK modules that hosts CMM System Manager, Part Manager, Learn Mode, Edit Mode, and Repeat Mode. Walk through each software module to learn about the various menus used to build, edit, and repeat part programs.

4) Probe System Overview
One of the most important components of the CMM, the Probe System is highlighted to explain the various measurement capabilities of the machine. Users are introduced to the three probe head styles (Fixed, Indexable, 5-Axis), along with touch and scan probe components. Users can also learn how to select their preferred stylus for certain measurement programs – from identifying the best stylus material, stem material, and stylus style.

5) CMM System Manager
Before beginning any measurement operations, users must first configure their system. This module details how to set up a new system configuration: from teaching your machine the correct size for the measuring envelope, to creating a masterball configuration for calibration or adding change racks for multi-probe measurement programs. Once a machine configuration has been created and saved, users will be asked to calibrate their probe data by following a step-by-step procedure found at the end of this section.

6) Coordinate Systems, Part Alignments, and Tolerancing
Now that your system is configured and your probe is calibrated, let’s work on creating a new part alignment. This section revisits the basic alignment theory before allowing users to align their gold block through six different step-by-step practice alignment programs. Finally, we will explain how to apply tolerances to measured features from your part program.

7) CNC Commands
Now that you can align and measure a part program, we now introduce the CNC systems on our CMM. Use this module to guide yourself through the various steps necessary to ensure you are safely and properly preparing your system for CNC movements. Users will be introduced to a basic workflow for CNC inspection; checking CNC Commands and Parameters, and learning about the various dialog boxes used to apply elements to your program. Once introduced to each element, practice inputting each CNC element based on the part prints provided within the course files.

8) Reporting
Measurement Results can be output directly through GeoPAK by setting up the Output Protocol. Walk through this module to learn how to create custom reports for your measurement programs.

9) CNC Programming
It’s time to bring everything together – from the concepts explained in this course, let’s build a CNC Part Program from scratch. Learn the beginning-to-end process of building a program in Learn Mode before fixing a mistake in Edit mode, and re-running the part program in Repeat Mode and outputting the measurement results.

10) C1 eLearning Exam
A certificate of completion will be awarded to end users for passing the eLearning exam following the conclusion of this course. Users have unlimited attempts at the exam.
