CNC CMM Delivers Productivity and Accuracy

“In the remanufacturing business, you can take apart a transmission, clean it, replace all the soft parts and get it back to the customer when they need a new part,” said Gary Noel, chief operating officer and member of the board at Dynamic Manufacturing, a premier supplier of world-class OEM new and remanufactured drivetrain components for the automotive industry. “The real creativity comes from developing unique processes that can repurpose that experienced part so that it performs as good as new.” Noel adds that OEM customers are discriminating, so a lot of gaging takes place to ensure the part meets every specification perfectly.

To meet those expectations, Dynamic Manufacturing was interested in speed, accuracy and cost. To be able to measure surface finish while the parts were positioned would be an advantage.

Because some transmission cases Dynamic Manufacturing works with are very large, the 9108 size Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex CMM (900 x 1,000 x 800 mm measuring envelope, which is approximately 35 x 39 x 38 inches) was recommended to provide additional Z height. The CMM also incorporates the Mitutoyo Surftest probe to assist with measuring.

Prior to implementation of the Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex CMM, Dynamic Manufacturing used a manual CMM without a motorized indexing head. To check certain specifications took 30 to 40 minutes. Now, inspection time is approximately five minutes, with dimensions and surface testing done in a single operation.
