Ins and Outs of Height Gages

Know your height gages for efficient and accurate measurements. A height gage does exactly as its name indicates—measures the height of a workpiece. A height gage is a measuring instrument in which a slider with a measuring stylus moves relative to a measuring scale on a beam and in which this motion is along a single vertical axis nominally perpendicular to a reference plane on the instrument base. Height gages are normally used on a granite surface plate to measure and/or scribe part features from a datum plane. Generally a scriber, test indicator, touch probe or CMM-style probe is used to locate the measured feature. Height gages are an indispensable instrument for quality control. Improving the Inspection Process

Michael Nahum, Ph.D., is presi- dent of Micro Encoder Inc., Kirkland, Wash., a wholly owned R&D subsid- iary of Mitutoyo Corp., Kawasaki, Japan. MEI develops new technologies and software for products, such as small hand-held measurement instruments like calipers and micrometers, and capital equipment like machine vision systems and coordinate measuring machines. The company employs a combined 85 people at its 30,000-sq.-ft. (2,787-sq.-m) facility in Kirkland and 4,000-sq.-ft. (372-sq.-m) facility near Los Angeles. Northern Illinois University Honors Dr. Jim Salsbury, Mitutoyo America Corporation, for Contributions to Metrology Education

At their 2014 Scholarship Banquet and Alumni Awards event, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Northern Illinois University (NIU) awarded the Department of Technology “Honorary Alumnus” to Dr. Jim Salsbury, Corporate Metrologist, Mitutoyo America Corporation. Dr. Salsbury and Mitutoyo have a long history of actively supporting metrology education at NIU. In 2003, Mitutoyo started working with the Department of Technology in the development of a metrology laboratory. In the initial development, Mitutoyo provided micrometers, calipers, hardness testers, as well as other important measurement equipment. In 2008, Mitutoyo officially established the Mitutoyo Metrology Laboratory on the NIU campus to provide an enriched, hands-on, educational experience for technology and engineering undergraduate students.   • Missed both acceleration and autocross dynamic events
  • Issue with electrical system was ground fault detection not working reliably; the electrical and controls divisions worked through the night, and rectified this.

  • Noise test (pass) - due to our lack of a tachometer, we had to tell the inspector what RPM we were revving at using an oscilloscope; the RPM had to be 8500, and have a maximum dB level of 110. We passed with 110dB.
